New Veggy iPhone Apps!
I’ve previously reviewed a few iPhone apps useful to vegans, HERE and HERE, so I was excited to come across two new ones to share with you guys.
The first is PETA’s inaugural App Be Nice to Bunnies and I’ve been waiting for it. It’s not a bad first attempt. The application is basically a mobile version of PETA’s famous “Do” and “Don’t” animal testing lists. Since one of my goals this year is to try to use completely animal testing-free products (I’m at about 50% right now), this app is definitely for me.
It’s got an awesome interface, colorful and really easy to use. Simply choose what you want to look up, companies that do test on animals or companies that have taken PETA’s pledge that they don’t.
What follows are easy to read lists, indicating if the product is vegan and cruelty-free.
You even can search by product, which is really cool. Of course, there are missing brands. For example, the hair products I use by Unite, that are strongly anti-animal testing, aren’t listed. Also, it’s not free, although 10% of the $1.99 price goes to PETA.
But over-all, it’s a great app to have on hand. In the drugstore or Sephora and trying to decide between two brands of lipstick or hand lotion? Just whip this out and the decision is crystal.
Be Nice to Bunnies App, $1.99 at the Apple App Store.
The second App I found is the new recipe one from Whole Foods. It’s FREE and just another reason to love Whole Foods. And hey, what’s the last time you got anything free from Whole Foods? Take advantage.
You can of course search by cuisine, and I was excited to see that both Vegan AND Vegetarian listed. A few years ago, there was barely a differentiation between the two. And now…
Anyway, my favorite part of the application the ability to search by what you have “On Hand.” This is a great idea! For example, I put in “Tofu”, “Carrot,” and “Rice”….
… And got a list of recipes including the following, one for Winter Squash Stuffed with Lentil Pilaf. Clearly, you need a few more things than tofu, carrot and rice to make this, but I like the idea.
Anyway, for a free App this is pretty good, I’d definitely recommend it if you’ve got an iPhone! It’s very handy, and I can’t wait to see the updates.
