Happy Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day, please check out Bagdad Dog and Cat Rescue, the website for a lovely British woman named Louise who facilitates the rescue of cats and dogs from Iraq and Afghanistan. She also helps soldiers bring home animals they have “adopted” while overseas.

She is truly an example of one person making a difference, and all the vet, legal and transportation charges are paid by donations. In her words:

…as a US soldier in Iraq you are not allowed to adopt the local animals so all of the soldiers that do this are doing it at great risk of ending up in serious trouble. These brave soldiers are miles from home and the ones they love and it is hard to ignore something that can give you comfort whilst here. They are here trying to make the world a better place and go above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis! While many people will adopt these animals and just leave them behind when it is time to go home, there is an increasing number of people that decide to take their adopted pets home which is the responsible thing to do. I would always advise that unless a person is in a position to take the animal home then it is probably better to just not get involved in the first place as it is not a responsible thing to do to take a wild animal and make it trusting of humans, tame and dependent on you for food then just leave it behind and expect it to fend for itself when it is time to go home.
