Keds, Yes, KEDS.

I haven’t worn Keds since, like, junior high. And back then, none of the cool girls wore Keds. They wore LA Gear. And if they did wear Keds, they were shiny, white and perfectly clean, as if their maids had just bleached them the night before. Actually, there’s no “as if”, I did have a friend whose maid regularly bleached her Ked sneakers. I on the other hand, not only did not have a maid, but was required to wear my Keds until they were dirty enough to warrant a replacement. Anyway, since I discovered pumps, high heeled boots and platform sandals, I don’t think I’ve ever worn them.
In fact, I didn’t even know Keds still existed until about a year or so ago when I started hearing the name a lot more. I’m not sure if they relaunched their advertising campaign or what, but suddenly Keds were around again, being embraced by nostalgic hipsters and riding the 80′s resurgence . Maybe it was due to Nylon magazine’s recent “Custom Keds” Give-Away but I started checking them out again, and admitted, they would look kind of cute with a summery skirt. Although they seem a bit more expensive than I remember ($60 for a canvas shoe? Really?), I’m impressed by the variety of colors and styles on their website, including a section called Keds Collective that has limited edition designs. Plus the “Design Your Own Feature” is pretty cool. I may just buy a pair.
Besides, how many girls do you see wearing LA Gear anymore?
