THEY’RE BACK!!  For those of you, like me, who lagged on ordering Jeffrey Cambell’s Limited Vegan Edition of his popular Litas (called the Vita), we’ve been given a second chance!  Berkeley store Convert has secured one more production run, with the boots being available via pre-order ONLY.

The collaboration with Campbell came about because of the friendship between him and the co-owner of Convert, Randy Brewer.  The two first worked together when Randy was a buyer at another San Francisco boutique.  This is their 3rd collaboration, and you can expect more vegan styles from them in 2012!

Vita by Jeffrey Campbell Details:

  • Price:  $149 with a 50% deposit + $10 for shipping
  • Heel Height:  approx 4.5″ with a 1.5″ platform
  • Boot Shaft Height:  approx 4″
  • Polyurethane upper/canvas lining/rubber sole

OMFG.  I have been typing “vegan Jeffrey Campbell knock-offs” into Google for years with nothing of worth coming up, until I did over the weekend and found….the motherload.  Just when I was starting to get frustrated with my daily shoe hunting, thanks to a post from this site I was turned onto June and Julia…. a site out of Indonesia that sells HAND MADE shoes with a synthetic option…. Check these…. Do you see why I am freaking out???

They also ship from Indonesia so that sounds like a headache and potentially pricy but…  So cute.  Obviously, I’ve already ordered 3 pairs.  I’ll let you know in a few weeks when they get here what the verdict is….

Update!  I  FINALLY got my shoes yesterday (1 pair of the Lola boots and one pair of the Pixie Heels, both in black) and I LOVE them!  They look way better than the photos, the (fake) wood is actually much darker, and they feel solid/well made.  Although they are “plastic” the quality is definitely good and better than I expected.  But note that they run a bit large.  I’m a size 7 but I think I would be better off in a 6 1/2.

I’m loving the new trend of mainstream “designer” companies jumping on the vegan shoe bandwagon.  Recently, Gucci, Charles David, and now Puma have released animal-free footwear.  According to the press release posted on EcouTerre (one of my fav eco-fashion sites btw), The PUMA Re-Suede has been developed using the latest materials and processes in eco-friendly product innovation. Every aspect of the shoes has been designed with environmental impact in mind including the upper, sockliner, laces and sublining…all made with 100% recycled materials and an innovative new outsole material. (The only bummer is that the word “vegan” isn’t actually mentioned in the press release).

I always tell people that anything can be made vegan.  As further proof I present: vegan ballet slippers!  If you are a dancer you can now dress in cruelty-free clothing from head to… toe.  The shoes are available through the Cynthia King Dance Studio in Brooklyn, New York.  They are made of soft canvas with a non-slip sole, and come in pink or black, adult and children’s sizes.  They retail for only $24.95 a pair and can be purchased online HERE.

This year Cynthia King Vegan Ballet Slippers were selected by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s National Director of AileyCamp, Nasha Thomas-Schmitt, as the required slipper for two of the organization’s innovative camps serving in-need children.  Natalie Portman and Emily Deschanel are also fans.

Iron Fist hooked me up awesomely a few weeks ago with two pairs of shoes I had been admiring from their website.  Born out of the punk/skate/street culture of San Diego and Orange County, Iron Fist has been around since 2001 and can now be found all over the world.  I’ve got a bit of a soft spot in my heart for skulls and bows, so their whole line of women’s platforms, flats and boots really got my motor running.  All the shoes (and a line of cute bags as well) are cruelty-free, and made, as the website claims, ”with love for a heartless world.”

Heartless indeed, but platform-less?  Never!
